Conflict Management in European Crises: Human Rights, Migration and Rule of Law

Ansprechpartner/in: Dr. Elisabeth Schmitt

Veranstaltungsort: Europäische Akademie Otzenhausen

Zielgruppe / Target group: Students and Professionals from US and other countries

Europe is no stranger to conflict. Having been the focal point of two world wars, arguably the largest genocide in history, and the front line of the Cold War during n the 20th century, the countries across the continent somehow entered the 21st century more united than divided. Some of these bonds, are beginning to crack as Europe is once again the center of global crises. A mass influx of migrants, the rise of populism, breakdowns of key political institutions and alliances, and global climate change policies, all point to Europe continuing to be an important focus for conflict management, peacebuilding, and development professionals.

This program will examine these past and current issues like human rights, migration and integration, Brexit. Through lectures, discussions, meeting with practitioners and interactive simulations, participants will get an opportunity to hear from those who experience these issues, what it means to them, and to the global order. Field trips include visits to the European Court of Human Rights and The European Parliament in Strasbourg, the European Museum Schengen (in Luxembourg), Saarland University, battlefields on the Franco-German border and the City of Trier. This program promises to offer something that will be memorable and thought provoking for anyone interested in the future of conflict and peace.
