Greek mythology was the inspiration for this sculpture: Zeus, the supreme god, punished the Titan Atlas by forcing him to hold up the vault of heaven at the western end of the world known to the Greeks at the time. As a titan, Atlas was a giant and at the same time a member of a dynasty of gods. He symbolizes the Atlas Mountains in North Africa (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia), because according to legend he was petrified to a gigantic rock - the mountain range that bears his name today. Atlas is often depicted - as here - with the celestial or terrestrial globe on his shoulder.

Evelyn and Bernd Geiter work in the Old Mine Velsen in Saarbrücken-Klarenthal. They regularly organize exhibitions and events of artists there. The annual exhibition v.ArtVelsen and the name "Ateliergemeinschaft Geiter" (works together with other artists) are well known. But they are also very successful as individual artists. The forms of expression of their expressionist sculptures and sculptures range from dynamised-minimalist to contrast-rich, line-focused and figural. In doing so, they use very different materials, material compositions and processing techniques. Mostly the human being is in the centre of their work, whereby his emotions, liveliness and inner experiences manifest themselves.
