Guiding principle from 2017 to 2020
It's your Europe - Yourope!
"Polycrisis" – catchword of the European Union between 2005 and 2019?

Economic decline in many EU states. High rates of (youth) unemployment. Difficult and often rejected integration of millions of refugees and migrants from all over the world. Serious interferences with fundamental values such as democracy and the rule of law in some EU states. Centrifugal forces in the Union on the rise. International terrorism. Foreign-policy crisis for example in Ukraine, Syria or Libya. Increasing international isolation of the EU with a view to its long-standing partners such as the USA, Turkey or Russia. A mix of crises, which has led to a lasting loss of trust on the part of EU citizens. Critical, sceptical or hostile attitudes towards the EU and, as a result, nationalistic populism in almost all states of the European Union have become acceptable again. From 2005 to 2019 – beginning with the rejection of a Constitution for the European Union by the people of France and the Netherlands and ending with the first withdrawal of a state from the EU ever, also based on a referendum, the "Brexit".
The "Polycrisis" must be contained and come to an end by the end of this decade. In order to actually achieve this goal, the renewal of the citizens' enthusiasm for "Europe" is an important step forward. It is important to understand why and how the European States cooperate beyond the classic nation state. People should be able to discuss whether and why this cooperation is indeed "without alternative" – would any other alternative not push this continent far back into the dark ages of its history? Why is Europe important for me? What may be lost to me? Isn't Europe the continent, where we are needed, the continent, which is also ours, the continent, which comes to life thanks to our support and our enthusiasm, and which exists for our benefit?

Through its activities, the European Academy of Otzenhausen aims to contribute to (re)activating this European self-conception among European citizens by the year 2020. We need to make people understand Europe, to discuss critically and to expand our ideas.
Join us! Because it is Yourope!
